10 Notable Fictional Fathers

It is Father's Day (at least here in the U.S.) and the staff of Girl Who Reads have put together a list of memorable dads in fiction.
Amazon affiliate links are used in this post.

  1. Atticus FinchTo Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, is probably the first fictional dad that comes to mind. If you Google 'top fictional dads' it is just about guaranteed that he is on top of it. As Kathy states, "He was kind and gentle with his two children, a single (widowed) dad, and taught them by both word and deed the importance of respecting others.  His impassioned pursuit of justice for everyone gave his children a shining example in both word and deed.
  2. Charlie, This Was Not the Plan by Christine Alger. Read Susan's review.
  3. Charles 'Pa' IngallsLittle House on the Praire by Laura Ingalls Wilder, is another one of the fictional dads that comes quickly to mind. Even in the harsh frontier he always had time for his family.
  4. John, Abby's Journey by Steena Holmes. Read Susan's review.
  5. Arthur Weasley, Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. He might have been a bit of an embarrassment to his kids at times, but he loves them fiercely and they know it.
  6. Mr. MelendySpiderweb for Two by Elizabeth Enright
  7. Peter Stewart, An Acre of Fools by Aden James, is an interesting, complex character who struggles with what is right and wrong while dealing with a troubled child. Read Donna's review.
  8. Hans HubermanThe Book Thief by Markus Zusak
  9. Carlisle CullenTwilight series by Stephanie Meyer. Alison admits this character may be a bit controversial for a Father's Day list, he is a notable father in contemporary fiction. If you have read any of Twilight fanfiction, you will find that he is a very much loved father-figure in the fandom.
  10. Ned Stark, Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. Alison discusses Game of Thrones and also check out Ross's discussion.

Honorable Mention Fictional Father

As in real life where we often encounter men who aren't fathers in name but have embodied those qualities for an individual and they are honored on this day as well. From the pages of books, the honorable mention goes to the beloved character Matthew Cuthbert, Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. While all the raising of Anne was to fall to his sister Marilla, in his quiet, shy way he was always there to lend support and provide advice to Anne.

To all the Dad's out there, we wish you a very Happy Father's Day.

We would love to know who your favorite fictional fathers are. Tell us in the comments!

  1. Your list show just what a literary peasant I am. I haven't heard of one. I think it's time to stop playing Quake and do some reading.
