Come Home for Christmas by Matthew West ~ a Review & Excerpt

by Donna Huber

Come Home for Christmas
invites listeners to enter the Christmas season with the intention of returning their hearts to God. In the midst of what can be the busiest and most stressful holiday season, each chapter points the listener to the kingdom realities that God invites each of us to participate in through the birth of Jesus. Matthew West's humor, Bible-teaching, and storytelling challenge us to embrace this season of Christmas as the homecoming that God intends for it to be.

I read a lot of holiday fiction, and while it captures that magic of Christmas, it rarely captures the true meaning of Christmas. I try to read something that reminds me of the reason for the season. This year, I saw Matthew West's book Come Home for Christmas: Jesus Is Calling You Back to the Greatest Story Ever Told and knew I had to read it (well, listen to it).

West himself reads the books, so it is like he is talking directly to you.

It is not overly preachy. You can feel that he is talking from the heart, and it feels like a regular conversation. He uses a lot of pop culture references (such as the movies It's a Wonderful Life and Elf) to illustrate his points. At church each week, we have suggested "Gospel conversation" starters and the way he used these references is similar to that. So if you want to share about Jesus this season, you may get some ideas about how to start that conversation.

As I had an advance copy, I didn't get the accompanying pdf. I checked out the publisher's site to see if I could download it from there. I didn't find it, but I did see that they were offering a Christmas bonus that includes A 5-day Advent devotional, Printable conversation starters, and A 30-day guided journal. So once you've purchased the book, be sure to head to Thomas Nelson to get your gift.
