I Can Handle Him by @Debbie_K_Lum ~ A Review

by MK French

Quinn always loved Nick, who is seen as a troublemaker. It doesn't help that his last girlfriend Sienna had died in a car explosion. Most people in San Antonio think it was his fault and that he got away with murder, including Sienna's brother Reed. There are further circumstances that affect Nick, including resentment that he opened up a coffee shop to rival the one he, Quinn and their friend Tory used to work at. With her background in law, Tory starts looking into the problems affecting Nick to help him and avoid the creepy ex-boyfriend that continues to text her.

ebook, print (362 pages); romantic suspense
The small town mentality among their social group really stands out at the beginning of the novel, which adds to the ostracism Nick endures. Quinn and Tory are essentially his only friends at first, especially with everyone just finishing school and trying to start careers. The drama among the twentysomethings is going to be very familiar for a lot of readers, and some of the problems they have are common ones to work through. Even the secrets eventually revealed are also unfortunately common to deal with.

There were twists in the plot that I couldn't have predicted; "Quinn's mistake" in the book's summary was far more serious than I thought it would be. It was very well written, so that we go through the shock and grief along with everyone else, and then feel outraged on Nick's behalf when he's treated so terribly. There are clues dropped throughout the text so that the big reveal at the end has its explanation even though it was still a shock. The investigation to clear Nick's name and the romantic elements of the novel dovetail nicely, and we're left with a satisfying ending for the main characters. This is an engaging read that really sucked me in and had me rooting for them the entire way.

  1. Thank you for the wonderful review! It's hard to review a book that has such big twists and surprises without spoiling the plot, and you did it wonderfully.
