by Susan Roberts
Off the Beaten Path is the first book of a new series by Eloise Corvo. Based on book 1, it's going to be an interesting and exciting series to read. The characters are all written and very likable and the mystery kept me guessing until almost the end. Every time that I thought I figured out who the 'bad guy' was, there were more facts presented that proved how wrong I really was.

The story takes place at Stone's Throw State Park near Traverse City Michigan. The park ranger Maudy Lorso loves the park and loves living in the small town. She spends her days hiking in the park, helping people enjoy the beauty of this part of Michigan, and spending time with her friends in town. Two negative things occur at almost the same time - her boss calls to tell her about possible budget cuts that may affect the park and encourages her to work to have a great opening weekend for campers. At the same time that she is worrying about budget cuts, a dead body is found in the park and the police close the park down to visitors. The police chief asks for her help and she does what she can to try to find the murderer knowing that if he/she isn't found soon, the park will not be able to even have a season's opening which in turn may affect the possible budget cuts. In order to save her dream job and maintain her quirky, quiet life, Maudy jumps in to solve the murder of the dead man even if it means possible danger to her.
I really enjoyed this first book in the new series and look forward to future books about Stone's Throw State Park and Maudy who loves her job helping people enjoy the beauty of Michigan.
