I always enjoy finding a new-to-me author, and I wasn't disappointed in my first read by Sarina Bowen. This was a twisty thriller that had me guessing until almost the end. It's told in three points of view that all meld together to give the reader a surprising and satisfactory ending.
Rowan is a 40ish single mother and a talented architect working on restoring a historic mansion for the most powerful family in Maine. Her public persona is of someone very polished and an expert in her field. Inside, she's a mess. She has a 15-year-old daughter who is a normal teenager and giving her mother trouble at every turn. Her recent boyfriend has just dumped her via text, and she can't get over the rejection. So she spends a lot of her off time tracking him all over Portland. She knows it's not the right thing to do, but she just can't help herself. One evening, she sees that he's parked by the mansion she is restoring, so she takes a walk to find out who he is with at their favorite place to park. What she finds is his dead body. Because she was the first witness to his body, the police decide that she is the main suspect in his murder. To top it off, her ex-husband is now out of prison and living in the same area. When the police decide that Rowan isn't the murder suspect, they turn their attention to her ex. As Rowan works to try to figure out who killed her boyfriend and gets closer to the truth, she finds herself in danger. Will she be the next to die?
This was a well-written and interesting novel. My main problem with it is that I didn't really like the main character. She considered herself a mess, and she really was, and I got pretty irritated with her lots of times during the story. However, other readers may see her differently, so do yourself a favor and give this book a try.
