Unreasonable Doubts by Reyna Marder Gentin ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

This may be categorized as a legal thriller but it's so much more. It's a book about love and friendship and trying to decide what's really important in life. This is a debut novel for this author and based on this book, I expect that we'll see many more fantastic books from her in the future.

Unreasonable Doubts
November 2018; She Writes

Jewish lit
Liana is a Public Defender in NYC. Even though she was offered a job at a prestigious NY law firm, she felt the need to go to work at the public defender's office where she could help people unable to afford legal representation. After several years on her job, Liana is starting to lose her idealism as she continues to see repeat offenders and hardened criminals. Her boyfriend works at a high level law firm and is completely consumed trying to make partner and doesn't seem to realize that he and Liana are heading in totally different directions regarding their future.  As she tries to figure out wht she wants out of her career, she is given the case of imprisoned felon Danny Shea, who has been convicted of rape. But Danny's astonishing blend of good looks, intelligence, and vulnerability intrigues Liana. Could he be the client she’s been longing for―the wrongly accused in need of a second chance? Is he innocent? As their attorney-client relationship transforms into something less than arm’s length, Liana is forced to confront fundamental questions of truth, faith, and love―and to decide who she wants to be.

Legal thrillers can sometimes be very dry and boring during the court parts of the story but the author is able to make it all interesting. Beyond being a legal thriller this is a love story and a real coming of age story for Liana as she struggles to decide her future.
