Elia is Indian and Italian in heritage, so of course his family is trying to set him up with women (but will consider men too) because his parents had already been married before 26 and his father worries about him being alone. Sébastien is figuring out if his feelings are romantic or not; demisexuality means that romantic feelings develop after they're close and get to know each other, not an attraction based on physical appearance. Their other friends are also trying to navigate the dating scene, so we get panels with their text messages in counterpoint to Elia and Sébastien dancing around each other, trying to see if the other likes him. (Spoiler alert: they do.) We get to see the awkwardness of feelings and the "does he like me?" It's also funny to see how things are shifted a little from our world to theirs; Elia's favorite character is Batguy.
As a second volume, we don't get the world-building of the first one. You can still figure out that this world of magic and monsters isn't exactly like ours, but close enough. You can also figure out the relationships, and they reference events in the first volume enough that it's easy to figure out. It's endearing to see the first blush of romance and how they try to spend more time together and talk it out. It's a fun volume for romance.
Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
