Enola Holmes and the Clanging Coffin by Nancy Springer ~ a Review

by MK French

Enola Holmes is attending a funeral in February 1891 when a bell rings elsewhere in the churchyard. Someone had been buried alive, and the bell is alerting others. Trevina Trairom can't remember much about herself or why she was buried, and protecting the girl makes Enola cross paths with her brother Sherlock's current case. Together, they are squaring off against none other than Moriarty.

audio, ebook, print (336 pages); YA mystery

As a young woman on her own, Enola lives in a club where other independent women live and work, has a business with an absentee "boss" for property's sake, and doesn't often cross paths with her famous brothers. She has her own group of informants and friends she discusses things with, including Florence Nightingale. They help her with Trevina when she struggles to get her memory back, and once Trevina recalls the past, in hiding her. Enola is plucky and doesn't fear Moriarty or his men as much as her brothers. That isn't to say she has no fear, because she rightfully hides when possible and uses disguises and social mores to avoid him and his goons.

Enola is as much a Holmes as Sherlock is, or even Mycroft with his political acumen. She does what she can to protect Trevina from recapture, tracks down her family, and manages to surprise her brothers when she's more observant than they realize. It's a fun addition to the Enola Holmes series.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
