Six Little Words by Sally Page ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

Can one small note give her the courage to find a new path? One Note. One Act of kindness. Her new beginning is closer than she thinks.

Kate gave up her dreams of being a painter years ago. But six little words pinned to the notice board of her local café could change her path forever.

‘To be, or not to be…’ – printed on orange card with no explanation – appears one morning.

Bardy is a retired English teacher who would like to write but has writer's block.  Kate is in recovery from cancer and dreams of painting again.  Luigi is a widower who runs the local cafe.  Pia is a lawyer who has just moved from Denmark.   Add in a teenager, an older married couple, and a female entrepreneur, and you have a very diverse group of people.  They all sign up for a group in their small town that encourages them to find their artistic dream and prepare to enter something into a local competition.  This is an eclectic group of people, and it's surprising at first that they find enough common ground to become friends.    But following Bardy's lead, they all encourage each other to find their artistic dreams - be it painting, writing, or photography, and even one of them who wants to write a musical, and through their encouragement and doubts, they become friends.

Bardy's last name is Shakespeare, so there are quotes from Shakespeare to start each new chapter, and some well-known quotes start several of the friendships.  There are decisions to make and problems to solve, but there are some real laughs.  I especially enjoyed the older man who refused to wear his hearing aids.  He misheard a lot of things that ended up being very humorous.  So this book has all of the things that I enjoy in a good story -- it has older characters, problems that need to be solved, evolving friendships, some humor, and a bit of romance.

This was a feel-good story about the importance of friendship.  The characters were all well written, and I really enjoyed watching these strangers become important to each other.  It made me want to find a group to join to make some new friends.  This is my first book by this author, and I enjoyed this book so much that I think it's time to order some of her earlier books.
