Nieve Monroe is devastated after her boyfriend, Carter, dies saving her from drowning. She blames herself for his death, and so does his best friend, Max. Avoiding his accusing glances, Nieve goes to stay with her grandmother, who has always had strange stories to tell of uncanny happenings, of magic and make-believe. The next morning, Nieve wakes up on the first day of college, the year before. She's determined to do the year over to save Carter and make sure he never goes near the river. It means she might lose him in other ways, and the distance she puts between them makes her grow closer to Max. Does saving Carter mean that she must betray him? How can she forget the past and move on?

Nieve was largely raised by her grandmother, who raises sheep, makes and dyes the wool, and does fibercraft with it. All the women in her family knit a blanket over the course of their lives, and her grandmother burns a year's worth of yarn when she is too depressed after Carter's death to continue with college classes. On realizing she got a do-over, Nieve went out of her way to make changes in her life that would ensure she didn't date Carter, which inspired its own kind of grief. Each different choice she makes causes ripples, with more changes than expected. Again, it causes a grief she can't share with others. Her grandmother doesn't quite explain, but understands what happened even as she changes, too.
As Nieve redesigns her freshman year of college, she makes multiple changes and tries to grow as an artist. She sees different facets of Carter that she hadn't seen before, as well as Max. She grows closer to him, does a project, and sees how some events repeat themselves. Time continues to move forward, and eventually Nieve understands that while she was working alone to change the future, she has an impact on others, and it's not all about her wants. It's an interesting premise for a romance, and I'm glad Nieve made her connections.
