Double Shadow is book two in Andrew Ludington's Splinter Effect series. I reviewed book 1, Splinter Effect, and noted that if there were more books in the series (it wasn't evident if it would be a series), I would have to read them. I remember having some trouble following the audiobook so I opted to read this book myself.
I'm not sure it is really necessary to read book 1 before reading book 2. There are a few references to what happened in book 1. It is a time-traveling book, so the timelines don't have to match up. Like Rabbit meets Helen in book 1, but in book 2, he travels back to a time before they knew each other.
There is more about time-traveling mechanics in this book, but it isn't too technical.
This book seemed to be less about hunting for an artifact, as Rabbit's slightly off-book trip is focused on finding a person (who is also a time traveler). It doesn't eventually become a hunt for an object using an encoded treasure map. I'm not really interested in ancient history so I didn't really care about the historical aspects of the book.
It still is an adventure story, but there is a bit more focus on the characters in this book.
