Are you looking for an exciting thriller to consume during an upcoming vacation? Unless you are taking an airplane, this would be a great book to drop in your beach bag.
A couple of things to note upfront as you decide if this is the book for you.
One, it bounces around the timeline. It isn't truly a dual timeline plot. The main story starts with all the characters at the airport, about to board their flight to Puerto Rico. This plot thread moves forward, but the story alternates between the present time and flashing back to points in the past to reveal more about the characters and who the killer might be.
I thought this storytelling method worked really well for this story. It kept tension high as we learned about the connections between various characters.
Two, the story is told from multiple points of view. I know that changing POVs can be confusing, but it is pretty clear when the story is being told from a different character's POV. This plot is very much like an onion, and with each change in POV, another layer is peeled back.
I know both of those methods can be a turn-off for some readers, but they work so well for this story that I still urge you to try this book.
This isn't necessarily a nail-biting thriller, but it is definitely a page-turner. Particularly so if you don't believe in coincidences.
While I'm glad that I didn't read this on my vacation, because it would have probably made me a little anxious about my flights. But at the same time, I wish I had had a long stretch of time to just read. It is definitely a book you will want to read in big chunks (though it is just as enjoyable if you can only snatch short stretches).
If you are an audiobook listener, I noticed that it is read by one of my favorite narrators, Scott Brick. It should be a great listen.
This is my first book by Susan Walter, but she has several others, which I will be adding to my reading list.
