Bunk Beds & Bookish Vibes: The Ultimate Summer Camp Reading List

by Donna Huber

When I was a child, my favorite summer activity was summer camp. It was a week away from home where we sang songs, learned new skills, made crafts, and just got to be carefree kids. A few years ago, I found an adult summer camp in the Smoky Mountains, and it recreated all the great things about the summer camp of my youth. It seems to be an idea that is catching on, as I've seen advertisements for Pages & Pines, a summer camp for book nerds. I've heard of a few others.

Are you nostalgic for your summer camp days, or wished you had gone to camp as a kid? Relive, or experience for the first time, the carefree days of summer camp with this list of books.

The Clover Girls by Viola Shipman

book cover of women's fiction novel The Clover Girls by Viola Shipman

The Story:
Four childhood camp friends return decades later to see if they can repair the relationship that was destroyed that last summer together.

Why it is a great summer read: I think this is the only book that all three reviewers have read! It has all the great vibes of summer. MK said it is a "love letter to summer camps of the '80s". Susan said, "It made me laugh, and it made me cry," but most importantly, it reminded her of summers with her friends. I felt it was perfect for summer because of its nostalgic feel.

The Six by K. B. Hoyle

The Story:
A group of kids attending summer camp discovers a veiled passageway to a magical world that they must save.

Why it is a great summer read: Who hasn't dreamed of finding a secret passageway to a magical world? This is a children's/young adult series, but it is definitely entertaining enough for adult readers. I loved the whole series.

Why it is a great summer read: Susan wrote in her review, "This is a story about summer in all its glory, friendship that endures through the years, and how lessons that we learn at a young age continue to guide us through our lives."

Until Next Summer by Ali Brady
