The Bravest Hour is the 9th book in Anna Lee Huber's Verity Kent mystery series. I've only read one book in the series, Murder Most Fair. That is book 5, so I've missed a few things, but that didn't hinder my enjoyment of this book one bit. Actually, it made it was to go back and read the previous books more.
If I read the author's note at the end correctly, The Bravest Hour is part of a 3-book series within the series, covering a story arc set in Ireland during their fight for independence. While it might have been helpful to read the previous book, enough information is provided that the reader knows who the characters are and the basic plot.
As the author mentioned, the motivation, at least in part, for picking this historical event is because Americans aren't really familiar with it. For me, that is definitely true. I think all I knew about it before reading this book came from watching Downton Abbey.
I forgot how much I liked Verity Kent; her husband Sidney is great too. I do like a great, balanced husband-wife investigative team. I know this is supposed to be a cozy mystery series, and there is a mystery, but it reads a lot more like historical fiction - particularly those involving espionage.
I didn't want to put the book down and would read big chunks of it at a time. It is definitely one of those books that I would have liked to take on vacation so I could just have sat and read non-stop.
