The Ferryman's Daughter by Yasmin Angoe ~ a Review

by MK French

Forensic science teacher Sanaa Karrem had kept silent about her father being the serial killer known as the Ferryman, for how he placed pennies on his victims' eyes. He went missing eighteen years ago, but now bodies are found with pennies over their eyes. Sanaa receives threatening messages and increasingly disturbing "gifts" from the copycat killer, and she can't even tell her fiancé, Detective Marcus Morelli, the lead investigator on the case. She leans into her knowledge as a former medical examiner, but her father's legacy has persisted longer than she thought it would.

The Ferryman's Daughter

is the first book in the Bloodlines series. Sanaa had distanced herself from the past by changing her name after literally burying her demons. She's made a new life as a high school teacher; her childhood friend is a medical examiner, and her fiancé is a police detective. It's an idyllic life that quickly ends as bodies resembling the Ferryman appear. It shakes her calm, reawakening memories she tried to suppress. She has theories about the current killer, especially when she's able to see the differences from her father's style as well as similarities.

I felt bad for Sanaa as she tried to keep the past and present separate. The investigation and thrilling action finale kept me riveted. I feel like there's a statement about how city politics and journalistic sensationalism are corrupting influences, and that there are significant consequences for truth and justice. As the start of a new series, I can't wait to see what the future holds for the characters.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
