Julian Fong, the CEO of his family company, is such an intense workaholic that his family forces him to take a two-week vacation. With no idea how to spend that time, he impulsively hires the woman he meets at a coffee shop to teach him how to relax. Courtney Kwan is a biomedical researcher, but knows how to enjoy the little things and is up for the challenge. The problem comes when the vacation is up and Julian has to return to work.

Mr. Hotshot CEO is another romantic comedy featuring Asian characters, which is delightful to see. As the oldest of three children, Julian has a responsibility to take care of the family, especially after his father had to retire from the company. It's not even an exaggeration to see this line: "Asian mothers aren't supposed to tell you that you're working too hard. They're supposed to tell you that you're not working hard enough." That certainly had me laughing out loud while reading because of how true it is. He is uptight about everything, even how to get a chance to relax, leading to this setup. Courtney, on the other hand, does have a history of depression. This is why she appreciates the little things in life when she isn't depressed and isn't as focused on everything rigidly following a plan. It does give her a bit of a pessimistic outlook on romance, making her a perfect contrast to Julian.

Even in romantic comedies, there is a thread of drama to stir the emotions a little more. Here, the drama is less of a misunderstanding or poor communication skills. Courtney's depression and negative thinking is very real and is treated with honesty and respect. It's not played for laughs or dismissed so those with depression won't feel as though their illness is being slighted and those without depression can get a picture of what it feels like and understand it. Julian handles it wonderfully, so he also is a great role model for how to help someone with depression.
