A Christmas Carol
November 2020; Dammaged Productions
audio (1h11m), ebook (79 pages); classics
As a child, my family watched the George C. Scott movie version of A Christmas Carol. It scared me. It started with the reveal of Ignorance and Want under the Ghost of Christmas Present's cloak and continued with the Ghost of Christmas Future. As an adult, I no longer watch that version. My favorite movie version of A Christmas Carol? Hands down it is The Muppet's version.

A few years ago I read Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol for the first time. It was a Penguin or Dover thrift edition that I picked up at the discount bookstore during high school. For a short story, it took me quite a while to read it. I just struggled with it. Then last year I read a version in a Christmas anthology that I loved. It was so much easier to read.

So I was curious to listen to Dave McCluckey's edition of A Christmas Carol. I was so excited in fact that I missed a very important detail - it's in RHYME! When the introduction started on the audiobook and I heard that I couldn't help but grin and that grin grew bigger with the opening lines of the story. It was so much fun! It was kind of like if Clement Clarke Moore (the author of the poem 'Twas the Night Before Christmas) had written A Christmas Carol.

In addition to being in rhyme, the audiobook was performed more like a radio show (yes, there are some sound effects). If I didn't know that Liam Scott was the only narrator I would have sworn it was a full cast of voice actors. It was incredibly performed and produced.

I know Christmas for many won't be the same as in year's past. If you are looking for new activities to share as a family, then highly recommend Dave McCluckey's A Christmas Carol - in rhyme. If A Christmas Carol has long been part of your family tradition but you have youngsters that are either frightened by the visuals or struggle with the older language of the traditional story, then Dave McCluckey's version is perfect.

Hop in the car with the family to see holiday lights while listening to this charming rendition of an old classic and create some great new memories that your family will cherish for years to come.
