About the only time of year that I will read a romance novel is during the holidays. Even so, I usually choose rom-coms. With the mention of attacking llamas, I thought this would be a Rom-Com, but it is mostly Rom with just a moment or two of Com.
Even the llama attack takes place off-page (both times). Though we do get a good deal of llamas in the story.
It is a typical romantic, damsel-in-distress story. Scout has recently lost her grandfather, and the wealthy rancher next door wants to buy some of her land. Not only is she grieving and feeling overwhelmed with running the farm solo, her neighbor is also harassing her.
Hudson is passing through town (it's called Candy Cane), looking for a custom rifle maker. Apparently, he gets lost and is found trespassing on Scout's land (this all takes place before the book starts so you just have to assume that is what happens based on a few things mentioned).
I liked the main plot of her neighbor harassing her and Hudson wanting to protect her. I thought the twist would be that Zach really didn't know what was happening and that it was his brother and son harassing Scout.
Introducing her ex and that plot line could have been left out. It felt like an afterthought to the plot - like the author thought the book needed a little more action at the end. It came out of nowhere and I don't think it really added anything to the story.
The romance felt more like lust than love. The sex was more descriptive than I like - I don't care to have private body parts mentioned.
For those who love romance novels, then this one will check all the boxes. And good news! If you enjoy this one, it is book 3 in the thematic series Holidays with a Hitman.
