The Fair Weather Friend by Jessie Garcia ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

It's always sunny in Detroit for Faith Richards. The popular TV meteorologist, endearingly referred to as "The Fair Weather Friend" by her viewers, has the world by the tail. But one night, Faith leaves work on a dinner break and never returns. Her body is found the next morning.

When I started this book, I was reminded of two books: The Secret of Snow by Viola Shipman and The Business Trip. I had forgotten that The Business Trip was also written by Jessie Garcia. But let's start with why I was first reminded of The Secret of Snow.

The main characters are both meteorologists, and the story takes place largely in Michigan. Both characters feel a little lost in their careers and lives and are searching for what they truly want.

But it was pretty quickly noticeable that The Fair Weather Friend is not going to be like The Secret of Snow. And when that realization occurred to me, that is when I started feeling like it was really similar to The Business Trip. Soon after that, I realized they were written by the same author.

I'm not a fan of cookie-cutter stories where as the plot is basically the same with different characters. So I wasn't super invested in the story because I felt like I knew what was going to happen. And because the twist was expected it didn't have the same jaw-dropping effect that it did in The Business Trip. It was difficult to keep going with the story.

The characters are great. I know that some readers don't mind the predictive nature of a reused plot. Or maybe you haven't read The Business Trip. Then there is no reason that you wouldn't enjoy this book and find it enthralling.

Gail Shalan does a great job as a narrator if you are interested in listening to the audiobook. There are a number of female characters, but I had no trouble knowing who each character was.
