The Forsaken and the Fated is the second book in the duology, following The Hollow and the Haunted. You absolutely have to read that one first, because this book picks up after that one left off. Miles is terrified that he can't save Gabriel, and Gabriel started off the book trying to find a way to keep the prophecy from killing Miles. The two are sort of at odds because attempts to talk are either misinterpreted or deliberately thwarted. This isn't the miscommunication trope, but two boys who care too much about each other and think to sacrifice a burgeoning relationship to save him. Of course, that's not how prophecies or the course of fate work.
The bulk of the book involves the efforts to uncover the cause of the curse to undo it. Of course, things escalate, and the intensity of the emotions between Miles and Gabriel progresses. I was fully invested in their story, and the lengths they'd go to in order to save each other and the family members caught up in the curse. There's a lot that happens over the course of the book, whether it involves the evil grimoire, raising zombies, and shadowy magic trying to enforce the curse. Each escalating problem kept me turning pages. The ending fits the duology and gives us a look into a future we wished for.
