audio, ebook, print (352 pages); magical realism

A year or so ago, I noticed that I kept picking up books featuring a bookstore or library, and then I started to intentionally seek them out. After all, how many different plots can involve a bookstore or library?

I've been pleasantly surprised by the variety and have only occasionally run into similar stories (usually because they featured a real bookstore or library in a particularly historical event).

I've only occasionally read one featuring magic, which is what drew me to this book. It's not magic in terms of witches. Instead, there is a magical object that allows fictional characters to step out of the pages of their books and into the real world. What reader hasn't wanted to meet their favorite character in real life?

In some ways, this was reminiscent of a childhood tale. The giddy innocence of the characters as they discover the magic. If the characters had been younger, this could have easily been a middle-grade book.

The characters are adults. Stella is probably in her late 20s (I'm basing this on the fact that she has a master's degree but still seems new to adulting). She seems to be a capable adult who just hasn't quite figured out what she wants to do in life (it's not accounting, which is what her degree is in). That all being said, there was a moment when I thought I was going to have to DNF the book.

When she discovered the magic, she acted like a petulant child. It was highly annoying, but more so, it felt out of character. Up to that point, she didn't seem like the person to throw a tantrum. I understand that the author had to find a way to create mayhem with the magic, but I think there could have been a better way.

Overall, this is a feel-good cozy fantasy novel. It is great when you want to curl up with an easy read.
