Félicie by Georges Simenon ~ a Audiobook Review

by Donna Huber

It’s the height of spring, and Maigret is grappling with doubly unfamiliar circumstances. He’s in the surreal new village of Jeanneville, outside Paris, where an elderly bachelor has been shot dead in his home. Тhe prime witness, his twenty-four-year-old housekeeper, Félicie, may well be among Maigret’s most unnerving adversaries. Infuriatingly clever, singularly self-possessed, and overtly antagonistic, she is surely hiding something—but what?

I'm not sure if this series is being re-released in order or randomly. Last summer, I reviewed the re-release of Yellow Dog which is book 6 in the Maigret series. Félicie is book 25. I also read a couple of books in the series for my mystery book club (book 26 and book 50).

These are short books, and I like the narrator, David Coward. I listened to this book in a weekend.

I'm not sure I enjoyed this book as much as the others I've read in this series. He seemed angrier than usual. I didn't understand his immediate animosity towards Félicie. I thought perhaps she and the murder victim had appeared in a previous book. I thought I had heard of Peg Leg before. Now that I remember that I've read the next book in the series, I think perhaps this case is referenced in that book.

This book was originally published in French in 1944, so it is definitely along the lines of a hard-boiled detective and noir novel.
