Book blogs are full of summer beach reads (we've featured a few of them) right now, but not everyone is heading to the water. Some people, like me, would rather spend their summer vacation on a trail in the mountains or by a campfire in the woods. I think the perfect pairing for a mountain adventure is a good survival thriller. Here are a few with characters on their own deep woods adventure.

My post-apocalyptic book club read this a few years ago. It is well-written and interesting. I'm pretty sure if you are in a remote cabin, you're going to be a little creeped out reading this one.
The Setting: A remote cabin on a New Hampshire lake.
The Premise: Two dads and their daughter are enjoying a quiet family vacation when four intruders appear. They say they have been brought together by a prophetic vision, and the only way to stop the coming apocalypse is for the members of this family to willingly sacrifice one of their own.
Movie Tie-in: If you aren't off the grid, you can add a book and movie night to your trip, as this has been made into a movie (Knock at the Cabin). I haven't watched it yet - I think it might scare me too much.

Force of Nature by Jane Harper
My mystery book read The Lost Man by Jane Harper. It is one of her standalone novels. Force of Nature is book two in the Aaron Falk series. Aaron Falk is a federal police investigator. Since it features women hiking, it might be the perfect book to accompany me on my week of hikes.
The Setting: A fictional mountain range - the Giralang Ranges - in the Australian bushlands.
The Premise: A company retreat for 5 women turns dangerous when one goes missing. The remaining women speak of fear, violence, and fractured trust during their trip. Will Falk uncover dangers that run deeper than anyone knows?

The River by Peter Heller
Does your trip include fishing or being on a watercraft? Then you should definitely pack a Peter Heller book with you. My post-apocalyptic book club read Burn, which is about two men returning from their annual off-grid hunting trip to find the country torn apart by civil war. You can read my review. I like Heller's simplistic, yet incredible detailed writing style so I would love to read another of his book. The River is book one, followed by The Guide. Any of these three would be great for your outdoor adventure. If you are just boating, try The River:
The Setting: A canoe trip along the Maskwa River in northern Canada.
The Premise: Two college friends plan a leisurely paddle where they will pick blueberries by day and star gaze at night while reading a paperback Western or two. A wildfire ripping through the forest adds urgency to their lazy days. But is the wildfire the only danger they must out paddle?

The Guide by Peter Heller
The Setting: Kingfisher Lodge, an elite fishing lodge in Colorado.
The Premise: Jack is assigned as a guide for an ultra-rich celebrity. What should be a relaxing summer of casting line, paddling along the river, and sleeping under the stars turns into something much more sinister within the camera-surveiled, barbed-wire compound.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King
I don't read Stephen King. I've only read 1 of his books because my book club read one a few years ago. If you are hiking the Appalachian Trail and want a thriller, who better to turn to than Stephen King.
The Setting: Maine to New Hampshire section of the Appalachian Trail
The Premise: A story of survival as 9-year-old Trisha gets separated from her brother and mother on a day hike. Trying to catch up with them, she becomes lost in the wilderness maze full of peril and terror. All she has is the imaginings of her favorite baseball player to keep her safe from whatever is leaving a trail of slaughtered animals and mangled trees.

Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger
The Setting: An isolated luxury cabin in the woods, spectacular views, a hot tub and a personal chef.
The Premise: A deadly storm is brewing. The rental host seems just a little too present. The personal chef reveals that their beautiful house has a spine-tingling history. And the friends have their own complicated past, with secrets that run blood deep.

Descent by Tim Johnston
Are you heading to the mountains with your family? Reading about the Courtlands' vacation may have you appreciating yours even more.
The Setting: The Rocky Mountains
The Premise: The Courtlands are heading on one last family vacation before 18-year-old Caitlin. Each family member has different hopes for this trip, but the majestic beauty of the mountains can be just as terrifying. When their vacation turns into a nightmare that only happens in headlines or on TV, the family is left with more questions than answers.

Whether you are taking a day hike, climbing a mountain, going off-grid, or enjoying nature from a luxury wilderness resort this summer, I hope your trip isn't as eventful as the characters of these books experience. If you just want some scary stories to read around the campfire, check out MK's recent review of three horror novels for your deep woods camping trip.
