Day 2: Favorite Section in the Bookstore #BookBlogExpo

by Donna Huber

It's Day 2 of the Book Blog Expo. I hope you enjoyed the Twitter chat last night. Remember you can talk all day long at the Facebook party. We will have another Twitter on Saturday morning. See the whole schedule.

Let's get to today's topic: Favorite Section in the Bookstore

I tend to flit about the bookstore, though I always make sure to check out the bargain shelves. Partly it is because I need to make my book budget stretch as far as possible. But on the other hand, I often find titles by authors I enjoy that I have not read.

Recently I picked up The Island House by Nancy Thayer. She writes great summer reads, but I haven't had a chance to read much by her. I'm excited for pool season. Another favorite author I don't get to read much is Jefferson Bass so I was thrilled when I discovered The Breaking Point in the stacks of discounted books.

Since I like to read a bunch of genres I get a good spattering to choose from on the bargain shelves. It is also a great rack to try out new authors. Last summer when I was on my cozy mystery kick, I found several cozies on the bargain rack by authors I didn't know or had seen only in passing various blogs.

When I go to a brick and mortar bookstore, I love looking at the pretty covers which means I spend a good bit of time in the fantasy section. They have some of the best covers. Unfortunately, I don't read much fantasy. My niece does though so I get to ask her what the books are about.

When I got to an online bookstore, I usually head to the thrillers. I love dark stories, but not horror. You would think with all the evil in the world that I wouldn't want to read it about it for pleasure. But I think it is because I don't understand how someone can do these things that I search out why in fiction. I also love the strength of the human spirit as the victims of great tragedies not only survive but thrive. While I love a good psychological thriller, I'm more drawn to stories that focus on the survivors.

What is your favorite section in the bookstore?

  1. I am a total sucker for the bargain shelves!!

    1. Me too and since I'm a B&N member I'm always getting extra coupons so I can get the books on a really good discount. I also love the 80% discount book stores. We have a new one in town but I haven't made it there yet.

  2. I always go for the scifi/fantasy shelves.

    1. I only go there for the pretty covers, for my niece, or to pick up the latest book for my post-apocalyptic book club.
