The Oscars 2020

by Alison DeLuca

Watching the Oscars has made me realize several things:

1. Do I need a gown that costs the price of my yearly mortgage? No.

2. Parasite is on my bucket list, but of course.

3. I admire Timothee Chalomet's bravery in stretching the edge of the fashion envelope. However, when you do that, sometimes you have a miss - which he did this year. An HVAC uniform done in satin is still a uniform nonetheless.

4. Natalie Portman's dress was divine. Also she wore the names of female directors who weren't nominated embroidered into her cape, and I. Am. Here. For. It.

5. It has been at least 20 years since I reread Little Women and Young Wives, and the time has come -as I said in a previous column, Thank you for the reread excuse, Greta Gerwig!

6. Billy Eilish slayed in her rendition of Yesterday. She owned that song.

7. Also, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Farrell need to star together in something, anything. I'm thinking - dramedy? Rom-com parents? My sweet lord, those two are funny together.

8. Speaking of Timothee, I really like him and his screen-partner, Saoirse Ronan. She's lovely and talented and deserved so much better than the two separate dresses smushed together into one strange look. That gown was good for nothing other than hiding snacks in the tummy frills. Maybe Taiki Waititi could have used it for his Oscar storage spot.

9. Cynthia Erivo always looks and sounds incredible.

10. Janelle Monae is a national treasure.

11. This whole 'hostless' thing really isn't working, and Steve Martin and Chris Rock should have stuck around for the whole gig.

12. Scorsese is a living legend, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who's tired of the same movie being made again and again.

13. The red carpet would have been a lot more beautiful with JLo around. I said what I said.

14. No seriously, what do winners do with their statues? Do they just hold onto them during the entire show? Storing one under the seat like luggage is far more sensible.

15. I've added a lot of must-see movies to my list, as I always do after watching the Oscars...

16. ... and I also want to add more books, but the list of book-to-movies seems to be growing slender.

So, I'm looking for great watching and reading ideas for the year. Any recommendations?

In the meantime, here's to another round of Oscar winners and red carpet looks.
