The Yes Factor by Erin Spencer & Emma Sable ~ an Audiobook Review

by Donna Huber

I was hesitant to listen to this audiobook because I wasn't sure what kind of romantic comedy it would be. But it reminded me of the dating self-help book that came out many years ago where the author said "yes" to anyone who asked her out, so I decided to give it a try and hoped there weren't any steamy sex scenes.

The Yes Factor
is more of a women's fiction romance than a chick-lit romance, though there are a few chick-lit tropes. The two female protagonists are approaching 40 and their love lives aren't what they expected. Bex is a single mom and Liv's husband is cheating on her.

Liv flies to L.A. to help Bex get back in the dating game, and escape her own reality for a bit. Bex isn't so sure Liv is there to help as there are a number of gaffes, like attending a swingers party. The dating mishaps offer levity to balance the more serious "finding oneself" moments that both women experience throughout the novel.

I liked the best friends. Sometimes I find characters in these types of romances a bit annoying because they are all "woe is me. I'm single. The world is ending". Thankfully they are not like that. I remember when I was about to turn 40 and feeling like it was my last chance at a relationship. I thought the characters were realistic in their feelings and thoughts.

I did occasionally forget which character was Bex and which was Liv, but isn't that how it is sometimes with best friends? But in an audiobook, it can cause confusion. Usually when the chapter changed character (it did say which character) I had to spend a minute or so reminding myself which character it was because I couldn't always remember if Bex was the single mom or the one who flew over from England.

The narrators did a good job with the performance. Though I'm glad that the chapters said it was either a Bex or Liv chapter as the voices weren't all that different.

Overall, this would be an excellent book for the beach this summer.
