ebook, print (160 pages); children's graphic novel

The art and lettering of this graphic novel are fun. The colors are bright, there's graffiti lettering and hip-hop and kung fu puns and jokes. (It feels so odd calling it classic hip-hop, but chapter titles playoff groups and songs from the 80s and 90s and made me nostalgic.) Having defeated a Big Bad in volume one, Wax is sure he can defeat incoming fighters from Discopia. I laughed at his sister providing running commentary, and Kabuki's "deep" statements were actually literal. And how is it that Wax's parents don't recognize the robot version isn't actually Wax? It's such a comic conceit, it's hilarious. We know how the comic must end, but Wax has a wonderful idea to save Brooklyn and his friends, and honor the changes in characters. It won't stop the problems that can fill out a volume three, but this is a fun book to read and reread.

Like most children co-opted into becoming a hero, Wax wants to remain a child and seek out his original dream of being a DJ. Becoming a king wasn't on his agenda, and fighting off evil wasn't part of his original plan. But now with fighters constantly coming to try to defeat him, sometimes using his friends against him, Wax must step up.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
