A Wish for Winter by Viola Shipman ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

"Books expand our minds.  They change our perspective on the world.  They allow us to escape, to hope, to dream, to mourn, to walk in someone else's shoes.  They save lives."

"All I wish is for Christmas to be the way it used to."

I don't read a lot of Christmas-themed books but this one was by one of my favorite authors and takes place in my home state of Michigan so I knew that I had to read it.  As usual, the author doesn't disappoint.  This is a heartwarming book about Christmas, a bookstore, and a woman looking for love and trying to find Christmas the way it used to be.

Susan is 40 and managing her family bookstore in Petoskey, Michigan. Christmas has always been the most exciting part of the year for Susan and her family.  Her mom and grandma both met their future husbands when they were dressed up as Santa and Susan hopes to do the same.  But her parent's death when she was 14 greatly affected her self-esteem and her ultimate joy in Christmas.   When she is in Chicago at the Santa Run, she is dressed as Mrs. Claus and meets a Santa that she has a spark with but he doesn't show up after the run and she had no idea who he was.  Her best friend decides to publicize her search in hopes of finding this Santa.  Three men claim to be the man who talked to Mrs. Claus at the race so her friends decide that she'll go on a date with all three of them to find out if one of them was her special Santa.  Will Susan find a Santa to fall in love with and to help re-kindle her love of the holiday season?

This was a fun book to read.  Not only was it set in beautiful Petoskey but it was a book about a bookstore and about a woman who loved to read.  Susan's grandparents were fantastic characters and her best friend and bookstore employees were all hilarious as they tried to help Susan find her Santa.  This is a heartwarming story about love, friendship, family, and the beauty and magic of the Christmas season.
