On Moonberry Lake by Holly Varni ~ A Review

by Susan Roberts

Cora and her mom spent a lot of time with Cora's grandparents when she was growing up.  When she was seven, her mom moved them away and she never saw her grandparents again.  Because of the estrangement between her mom and grandparents, Cora and her mom were never close.  She felt like her mom had removed her from a place where she was truly happy.  Now almost 20 years later, her mom has died and wants to be buried in the town she grew up in.

ebook, print (336 pages); romance

While Cora is there, she is approached by Sam, a friend of her grandparents, who tells her that they had left their lodge to her in their will.  The only requirement is that she had to live there for a year.  If she didn't she would totally lose the inheritance.  Cora was at a turning point in her life.  She had just broken up with her fiancé and didn't have many friends.

She decided to stay at the lodge but was appalled at the state the home was in.  It was literally falling apart.  Sam finds someone to help and she starts work on renovating the lodge.  Along the way, she meets some of the quirkiest people that I've read in a while - a cantankerous handywoman, an angry neighbor, and an elderly woman who spends all her time talking to the "residents" in the cemetery and Cora's not sure she can stick it out.

But she does stick it out and she finds that the quirky people that she meets care about her.  At Moonberry Lake, she finds all of the important things that had been missing in her life -- real friends and family.  Not a blood family but people that she cared about who cared about her plus she found a bit of romance.

This book was a fun read about the importance of friendship and family and how they can show up in the most unexpected places.  The characters were well written and this would be a perfect beach read.

Susan Roberts grew up in Michigan but loves the laid-back life at her home in the Piedmont area of North Carolina where she is two hours from the beach to the east and the mountains in the west.  She reads almost anything but her favorite genres are Southern Fiction and Historical Fiction.
