In the twenty years since a zombie outbreak, Edie Brandstrup remained in the home she grew up in, making soap and surviving in a world that now knows about the existence of fae, vampires, witches, werewolves, and other kinds of supernatural. When she tries to save her goofy neighbor from a zombie attack, she discovers Max is actually a powerful vampire when he saves her life instead. The two work together to save others at Edie's insistence and discover that the latest zombie attacks are part of a larger conspiracy. The motley crew works together to save humanity. And along the way, Edie is falling in love with a grumpy vampire.

As much as zombies freak me out, this is a hilarious take on the genre. Edie normally patrols her immediate neighborhood within the containment area of the outbreak, makes soap, and mails it out to customers who ordered via Etsy. She thinks her neighbor is a stoner and oblivious to his surroundings when a stray zombie comes into the area. She means well with her attempt to save him, and it's a complete surprise when he saves her instead. He has a bunker and is a vampire named Gaston Maxime Boucher, so her eternally sunny personality means she sings songs based on the animated Disney movie when he's too grumpy. He's fully willing to hide until the all clear sounds, but she worries about others who might not have as good security or bunkers. This leads them to enter the containment zone areas, finding more zombies, other humans, and then the signs of a conspiracy when the usual methods to secure the containment area aren't functioning.

I enjoyed seeing the snarky conversation, the flashes of recognition when they know the same YouTube content creators, the mall invasion, and the background not only into the creation of the zombies, but of the relationships other supernatural creatures have with each other. It's very clever and riffs off some tropes in horror survival stories as well as our own suburban life. Along the way, the development of friendship and more felt naturally done, and I enjoyed seeing Edie and Max get to know each other and care. I really enjoyed the story.
