The four sisters get a letter from their mother about testing that she had done for BRCA that indicates the heredity of breast and ovarian cancer.  The sisters realize that they and their daughters need to be tested.  What Naomi doesn’t share with them is that she had recently had a cancerous tumor removed and was putting off starting her treatment.  There was so much going on in the family as reporters began to ask questions about the book that is being worked on that will expose a powerful family, and the sisters have to decide how best to proceed with the plans for the book.  They are so busy working on strategy that they don’t notice that their sister is sick and getting sicker.  But Naomi doesn’t want to share it with them, nor does she want to accept help from her boyfriend (who let me tell you is a real saint!).  She kept pushing family away as if believing that if she didn’t talk about it – it might not be real.  I understood her motivation for keeping the secret, but there were times – especially as she got sicker – that I wanted to just shake her for feeling so unloved by family who truly loved her.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE SERIES

There was a lot of political intrigue in this series, and I found it all very believable and interesting to read how many people could be involved in a cover-up for such a long period of time.  My favorite part of this series was seeing the relationship between the sisters grow – from total distrust in the beginning to the point that they knew they could totally trust each other and knew that they would all be together through bad times and good times.  

AUTHOR’S NOTE

The House of Harrington is a six-book family saga and is intended to be read in order.  Each book contains major emotional developments and important revelations but the larger family story continues across the series and will fully resolve in book six.   

Susan Roberts grew up in Michigan but loves the laid-back life at her home in the Piedmont area of North Carolina where she is three hours from the beach to the east and the mountains in the west.  She reads almost anything but her favorite genres are Southern Fiction and Historical Fiction.
