If you see Ellen Datlow's name on a collection of short stories, get it now. She has put together amazing collections in fantasy and horror for decades, and has an unerring instinct for what will work together.
We open with "That Hannie Agnes," an adult looking back on a childhood Halloween, with the surety that the creepiness he once felt is real. This sets the tone for the collection. The underlying reality is mixed up with magic or creepy things, sometimes with a considerable helping of sadness and rejection. I enjoyed "The Kuker" by Alma Katsu, which didn't end the way I expected but was fitting. Many of the stories involve spirits or monsters from different cultures, or those pretending to summon spirits and actually do so.
It's a clever, spooky collection, with psychological horror as well as the supernatural.
