Books I Meant to Read in September

by Donna Huber

Even though I have read more books this month than in the last few months, I still have books on my September to-read list that I just did not get to. A couple of these are Christmas books which I'm purposefully waiting to read for our 25 Days of Christmas Reading in December. Did you read all the books you planned to this month? Did you read any of these?

Pressure Depth by Jack Stewart

book cover of thriller novel Tom Clancy Pressure Depth by Jack Stewart

The story:
Jack Ryan Jr. leads a team of divers in a race to beat the Chinese Navy to a weapon of terrible destructive power.

Why I want to read it: I have been following the Jack Ryan series since I finished college. They were the books that got me into reading for enjoyment again. I'm not as big of a fan of the Jack Jr. books, but I still try to read them.

A Christmas Carol Devotional by Rachel Dodge

book cover of Christian nonfiction devotional A Christmas Carol Devotional by Rachel Dodge

The story:
This 25-day Advent devotional journeys through one of the world's most beloved Christmas stories, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, and helps you honor Christmas in your heart—and keep it all year!

Why I want to read it: I've done an Advent devotional the last few years and have really enjoyed them as part of my Christmas celebration. I love A Christmas Carol, so it definitely caught my eye.

Disenchanted by Lucy Jane Wood

book cover of cozy fantasy novel Disenchanted by Lucy Jane Wood

The story:
Sage Hemlock has no interest in embracing her witchy side. Magic has betrayed her before, bringing nothing but heartache, and she will not let something so foolish happen again.

Why I want to read it: This is the third book in standalone series. It is cozy fantasy. I thought it would be a fun, light read for Halloween.

The Age of Cures: How American Scientists Saved Your Life by Barry Werth

book cover of science nonfiction The Age of Cures: How American Scientists Saved Your Life by Barry Werth

The story:
The Age of Cures is the in-depth history of the birth of the pharmaceutical industry in the United States.

Why I want to read it: I feel like I haven't read a lot of nonfiction this year. I also work in science communications, so I like seeing how other science writers approach science writing.

Christmas at Honeycombe Bay by Lilac Mills

book cover of holiday romance novel Christmas at Honeycombe Bay by Lilac Mills

The story:
Two Scrooges come together for a festive-free holiday season by the sea and find all their anti-Christmas plans going up in smoke when they decide to play Santa for a single mom and her child.

Why I want to read it: I'm a sucker for holiday books. There have been years when I read nothing but Christmas stories from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day. This sounds like a sweet, heartwarming story.
