Mini Reviews: September Library Borrows

by Donna Huber

My reading pace is picking up a little as I read/listened to 12 books in September. While I did get a couple of audiobooks for review this month, I checked out 5 audiobooks from my digital library. I also borrowed 2 ebooks. (5 of the books I finished in September came from Libby.) Most of these had little to no wait at my library, so hopefully if something catches your eye, you can get it quickly too.

Death of a Ghost by M.C. Beaton

book cover of cozy mystery novel Death of a Ghost by M.C. Beaton

The Story
: Sergeant Hamish Macbeth hears reports of a haunted castle near Drim, he assumes the eerie noises and lights reported by the villagers are just local teenagers going there to smoke pot or, worse, inject themselves with drugs. Still, Hamish decides that he and his policeman, Charlie "Clumsy" Carson, will spend the night at the ruined castle to get to the bottom of the rumors once and for all.

Why I Read It: I've been reading through M.C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin series and have tried a book or two of her Hamish Macbeth. I don't think I enjoy it as much as I like Agatha Raisin. I've had a couple of this series' books on my want-to-read shelf at Libby and decided to clear my shelf a little of those that had been on the list for a long time. It was okay. I missed that the cat wasn't in the book. If you are looking for Halloween reads, then this would be a good choice for a not-so-scary read.

The Martian Contingency by Mary Robinette Kowal

book cover of science fiction alternate history novel The Martian Contingency by Mary Robinette Kowal

The Story:
Years after a meteorite strike obliterated Washington, D.C.—triggering an extinction-level global warming event—Earth’s survivors have started an international effort to establish homes on space stations and the Moon. The next step – Mars.

Why I Read It: I love this series. I received an advance copy of this book, but I never could find the time to read it. Since I've been struggling with reading since my father died, over Labor Day Weekend I decided to say the heck with my current reading pile and picked up this book. I checked out the ebook from the library even though I still had my ARC because I knew that once I started reading I wouldn't want to stop, and I could turn on Reading Assist while I was doing things like cooking meals and cleaning up. I basically read it in 2 days. I think this helped me reset and get back into reading this month. Read my full review.

The Side of Murder by Anna Lee Huber

book cover of historical cozy mystery novel The Side of Murder by Anna Lee Huber

The Story:
The Great War is over, but in this captivating new series from award-winning author Anna Lee Huber, one young widow discovers the real intrigue has only just begun

Why I Read It: After reviewing The Bravest Hour in August, I couldn't stop thinking about the characters and how the series started. I just went on Libby to see what books in the series were available and to add them to my wishlist for future reading. The Side of Murder is book 1, and it was available with no waiting. I had a lull in my book club and review books, so instead of picking a book that has been on my wishlist forever, I went with this one. And I'm glad I did. It was so enjoyable.

Acceptance by Jeff Vandermeer

book cover of science fiction novel Acceptance by Jeff Vandermeer

The Story:
It is winter in Area X, the mysterious wilderness that has defied explanation for thirty years, rebuffing expedition after expedition, refusing to reveal its secrets. As Area X expands, the agency tasked with investigating and overseeing it--the Southern Reach--has collapsed on itself in confusion. Now one last, desperate team crosses the border, determined to reach a remote island that may hold the answers they've been seeking. If they fail, the outer world is in peril.

Why I Read It: My book club read the first two books in the series, but a few years apart. Partly, I was curious as to where the story was going, and also I wanted to see if I liked it more if I read it shortly after the second book. Originally, the series was a trilogy, and this was the last book in the series. Though I haven't yet, I will try to read the 4th book soon to see where he took the story after he supposedly finished it.

Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

book cover of dystopian novel Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

The Story:
Engineer Paul Proteus must find a way to live in a world dominated by a supercomputer and run completely by machines.

Why I Read It: I read this for my post-apocalyptic book club. We just discussed it last weekend, and those who've read Vonnegut assured me that his later work was much better. The book club discussion was good.

The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood

book cover of cozy mystery series The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood

The Story:
To solve an impossible murder, you need an impossible hero…

Why I Read It: I'm loving this season of The Marlow Murder Club on PBS after only half-heartedly watching the previous seasons. Like the Verity Kent series, my Libby had the audiobook available with no waiting, so I dove right in. It was a lot of fun. I remembered some of the scenes from the show, but there was plenty that was also left out.

The Hunter by Tana French

book cover of crime fiction novel The Hunter by Tana French

The Story:
It’s a blazing summer when two men arrive in a small village in the West of Ireland. One of them is coming home. Both of them are coming to get rich. One of them is coming to die.

Why I Read It: I'm still listening to this one. My mystery book club will be discussing it at the end of the month. It is as boring as the previous ones I read. I missed our discussion of the first book in the series because I was traveling. I also missed the meeting when we decided what we would be reading for the next year - I wouldn't have voted for this one.
