Review: The Haunting By Nicole Garcia (@nicolegarcia325)

by Claire Rees

First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros is a weekly meme hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea.

The Haunting
The Intro

The sound of the faucet dripping woke Kelly up a little too early for her liking. She couldn't lay there and listen to it any longer. If there was one thing she hated, it was the sound of dripping water. She three a light gray fleece blanket over her head to quiet the sound hoping she could sleep for another hour. After hearing a few more drips fall into the empty stainless steel sink she'd had enough. She kicked the blanket off her body and stomped across the hardwood floors of her bedroom and into the living room. She made her way across the linoleum tiled kitchen floor and grabbed the needle nose pliers next to the sink. She squeezed and turned the loose screw tightening it as much as she could. Since there were no knobs to turn the faucet on and off this was her only option. The superintendent in in the building was useless with maintenance and she wondered how he ever got the job in the first place.

The Review

A new reality show has been advertised on TV, spend 24hrs in a well known haunted mansion  called Waverly Manor and the last man/woman standing wins one million dollars.

The six characters that get through the interview process all seem to have questionable lifestyles and/or are in desperate need of this money.

Kelly Sloane works at a seedy strip club as a dancer but is secretly trying to save to go to medical school, Jace ‘The Flame’ is the second hand man to the cities mob boss and does all of his dirty work, Felicia Wright a drug addict, an ex district attorney Mr Smith who was caught taking bribes off a well known gangster and lastly the seemingly normal Amber McCarty who was a self made business woman until her boyfriend ran off with everything and left her bankrupt.

The Haunting by Nicole Garcia focuses on Kelly and Jace and the sexual tension between them, they are attracted to each other but don’t seem to get along, that is until one by one the other contestants start to turn up dead, each having died a horrific death with links to what they done in life. Has the ghost of the manor come back to start again? Now Kelly and Jace are sticking with each other trying to survive the night, each unwilling to leave so as not to lose the competition and the money.

I started reading The Haunting looking forward to a good ghost or two, the story did not go how I expected it to however I was not disappointed and was happy with the way it ended.

The Haunting kept me gripped from the beginning and the way the deaths were described was really inventive and imaginative. I would recommend this story to anyone who loves a good mystery one that will keep you guessing and page turning until the end.

  1. Nothing is more annoying than a dripping faucet. I would not accept the challenge, I am too chicken!

  3. Although the opening didn't especially grab me, the premise of the story sounds good (even though I hate "reality" shows). Sounds like a varied bunch of characters, each one with an interesting back story. I'm curious about how each of them died and why.
My Tuesday post features TRAIL MIX.
