Connection to the natural world, to community, and to ourselves is fundamental to our well-being. When we nurture these connections, we thrive, drawing strength from the web of interdependence that sustains life. In an increasingly fragmented and urbanized world, accessing nature and knowing how to engage with it can be challenging. Mindful by Nature points the way, bridging nature connection and mindfulness practices.

If you are friends with me on Goodreads or perhaps you've seen some of my photos on our Instagram, you will notice that I've been reading about Shinrin Yoku, or Forest Bathing, for the last few months. Since I haven't really been able to hike due to a knee injury, I've been working on other aspects of my naturalist journey. In particular, I've been practicing mindfulness and being present in the moment. We do this at camp through something called a sit-spot. Mindful by Nature also mentioned sit-spots, so I thought it would be a good book to deepen my practice.
I liked that this book had practical how-to. The stories of their own experiences were interesting, and I liked how they tied what they were seeing in nature with how it coincides with things going on in their lives. Some of these had to do with perception, expectations, and truth.
Now they were often more extreme in their practice than I am. I'm never going to go camping in the woods with nothing but the clothes on my back. And while a hike on a night of a full moon is fun, I'm not going to do it in complete darkness.
Whether you are just starting out on a mindfulness practice or want to deepen your practice, this book will give you ideas to do just that.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
