Some of my favorite childhood memories are of sitting on my mom's lap while she read to me. Reading to children is important for their own literacy development but it also creates a bond between the reader and the one being read to. I loved reading with my niece and nephew when they were little. If you are looking for a book or two to share with the kid(s) in your life, here are some of my recommendations.

The Gateway Chronicles by K.B. Hoyle
These were the last books I read with my niece. She struggled with reading, but she loved this 6-book series so much that she was impatient with having to wait until she was with my mother or me to hear the next part of the series. She went from a non-reader to a voracious reader because of this series. It is a series that is enjoyed by children as well as adults. I highly recommend reading this with your kids. I have read this series multiple times, and my niece even wrote a review of the series.

The One Great Gnome by Jeff Dinardo
This is an adorable story. If your child is always searching for a hidden doorway in the wardrobe or looking for white rabbits to follow, then this is the perfect book. I listened to the audiobook, but I think it would be a great book to share with your kid.

The Backyard Secrets of Danny Wexler by Karen Pokras
This book reminded me of the television show The Wonder Years. It is set in the 1970s, so it has a nice nostalgic feel to it. As it deals with anti-seminitism it is a great book to start a conversation with your kid on the subject. The book made me laugh out loud so it would be a fun book to read together. Read my review.
