A Sprinkle of Sweet Serendipity by Rachel Linden ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

Paris trained chocolatier and single mother Emmie Wynne gave up her own dreams six years ago when she returned to her Pacific Northwest coastal tourist town to run her family's struggling candy store. Now on her thirty-fourth birthday, Emmie has only one wish, to be granted the vision that every Wynne woman is given once in her lifetime—a shimmering glimpse of her true destiny. This year, when she blows out her candles, it finally comes true.

A Sprinkle of Sweet Serendipity by Rachel Linden
Mahy 2026; Berkleyl 978-0593816660
audio, ebook, print (384 pages); women's fiction

The plot is pretty predictable, which is okay in a summer beach read/romance novel. Now, every romance novel is really a fantasy, but this one added a layer to the typical fantasy by including a little magical realism. In Emmie's family, the women receive a vision showing their purpose (and usually who they will marry).

What bugged me about the novel was Emmie herself. I don't want to call her stupid because she isn't (she's running a business after all), maybe clueless is the better word. There were a few things that I figured out early on in the book, and Emmie just didn't see it. Maybe because I didn't really like Emmie, but the book felt like is was droning on. I feel like it could have been a little shorter.

A Sprinkle of Sweet Serendipity is a sweet read. There is no sex in the book, just a few kisses. And there are some cute characters. Emmie's son is adorable. Dot, Emmie's mom, Walt, and Jakob are great and added to the story.

If you are looking for a book where you can mindlessly lose yourself. then you should pick up this book.
