Sister of Mine by Laurie Petrou ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

This was an interesting look at how you can love and hate a sibling at the same time and about the bond between sisters. I had a bit of trouble with this book as I have a fantastic relationship with my sisters and had trouble imagining the love/hate relationship that the two sisters in this novel had. Plus I really didn't like either sister and found both of them to be very difficult to feel any sympathy for. That said, I found this an interesting look at how secrets can ruin a relationship even among sisters.

Sister of Mine
Aug. 2018; Crooked Lane Books; 978-1683317173
audio, ebook, print (304 pages)
psychological thriller
Penny and Hattie are sisters in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business and will hold things against people for years. Both girls were bullied in school after their father left the family and that made their bond with each other even stronger. Penny always looked out for Hattie and tried to take care of her, especially after their mother died in a freak accident. The story is told by Penny when she moved back into the family home after her abusive husband is killed in a fire. The secrets that the two sisters share about this fire, makes their relationship even more of a love/hate relationship. It seems as if they love each other but much of the time don't really like each other. How long can they keep the secret about the fire before the truth comes out?  Will their relationship improve if the secret is revealed or will they continue to feel animosity toward each other?

This was an interesting look at love within a family and how secrets can affect everyone involved with the family even into the next generation.

  1. Thanks for sharing...I recently read this book, and didn't like the sisters, either. I wanted to yell at them for their choices. LOL.

Here's mine: “THREE THINGS ABOUT ELSIE”

    1. Laurel - I think I did yell at the sisters a few times while I was reading the book - luckily I was home alone - they just didn't listen. I have been planning on checking into Three Things about Elsie - it sounds really good.

  2. This is a new book for me. It doesn't sound like something I would normally choose. I'm glad you enjoyed it despite its flaws. This week I have As Death Draws Near by Anna Lee Huber - a historical mystery. Happy reading!

  4. This doesn't sound like a book I would probably choose for myself, however the storyline is very strong and compelling.

It is probably easier and less guilt ridden to read about fictional family conflict, than to face the reality of the conflict which rages inside most families, in one guise or another.

Definitely one for my radar, thanks for sharing :)

    1. Good point Yvonne - I'd sooner read about family conflict than to go through it again.
