An Unexpected Escapade by Kandi J. Wyatt ~ a Review

by MK French

Eighth grade brings with it a lot of problems: homework, reading for school, chores, and a new student named Karlie in the classroom. Myrtle Beach had some strange events the summer before, but Will won't discuss it with Ana or her best friend Daisy. They soon have a secret of their own when a unicorn shows up. Winston, the NSA Special Division officer is still present and will be investigating.

The Unexpected Escapade
April 2019; 978-1798585429
ebook, print (181pages); children's, adventure
This is the second book in the Myth Coast Adventures series (read my review of book one). There are cameos from the first novel, so it's nice to see how they've grown up a bit. Our heroes are new, and in eighth grade, so we have to contend with all of that in addition to the supernatural creatures. Daisy's selective mutism, that fear of speaking to many people outside of a few trusted ones, adds to the sense of fragility that I get from her characterization. Because we see Kajri's point of view as well as Ana and Daisy's, we get a chance to develop empathy for her as well.

We do get a quick overview of the first novel, so people that didn't read the first one won't get too lost. Winston has definitely learned his lesson from the first book and is putting in more effort to get to know locals and the area. This gives him a better opportunity to explore the area for anomalies, especially now that there is a new villain introduced. While a grown-up might think that the villain is a bit of a caricature, he's definitely frightening for children and younger teens. He's menacing and determined and doesn't think twice about threatening or harming others. As with the first novel, there are action sequences that will have young readers on the edge of their seats, and I was definitely concerned for their safety, too. There isn't a perfect happily ever after, but it's a realistic ending and definitely the best outcome for everyone.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and golden retriever.
