Curse of Wolf Falls by Brenda Whiteside ~ a Review

by MK French

Elidor MacKenzie, like every other MacKenzie, has a special ability. She's spent her entire life running from the ability to absorb the emotions and suffering of others. With her best friend dead and possessing the secret of an archaeological discovery, Elidor has returned home to Joshua. Her first love Jules has also returned after a twenty-year career in journalism. The scavengers, determined to find Elidor's secret, have followed her to Joshua. It isn't just rekindling a relationship on her mind now, but also saving their lives.

Curse of Wolf Falls
is the third book in the MacKenzie Chronicles, following Secrets of the Ravine (read my review) and Mystery on Spirit Mountain (read my review). The novels are interlinked but essentially standalone; reading the prior ones means you recognize events or characters, but this is Elidor's story from start to finish. (Hi, Magpie! Nice to see you again!)

Our introduction to Elidor is a tense one, showing us her ability, the secret she carries, and why it's so important to keep it safe. Julien is such a good reporter that his newscasts are recalled by a restaurant owner who offers freebies. Now that we know how talented they are, we can move on to the action. Because we also see the antagonists, we know what the reasoning is in going after Elidor, and of course, they assume that she shares the same nefarious motivations that they have. With only a week left on a government archaeological grant, the clock is ticking. That's the tension-filled thread as Elidor and Julien meet again and have a second chance at romance. The threads of course intersect, and at the end, we have a satisfying conclusion.

It's a fun continuation of the series, and I enjoyed seeing prior MacKenzies again.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
