The meet-cute between Michael and Elizabeth isn't cute for them, given that it ends up with Michael in a stream and the dogs mixed up. He's straightforward with no time for social niceties, while Elizabeth is well-known in the ton and is considered its crown jewel among eligible young women. She's smarter than people assume she is, and is exceedingly kind. She refuses to be left out of the search for the poodles, with just as many good ideas. This keeps the two of them in each other's orbit when they otherwise never would have met, and they see each other's positive traits. Elizabeth enjoys Michael's knowledge and isn't put off by his brusque demeanor, and he enjoys her wit and intelligence. Her erstwhile suitor who set this all in motion is revealed to the reader to be worse and worse, and we can't help but root just as hard for his comeuppance as well as for the happily ever after. This happens, of course, for all those in the book who have a kind heart. It's such a fun and engaging read, and I truly enjoyed it.
