Pumpkin Spice everything season is beginning - Starbucks has already started serving its seasonal drink - which means fall is around the corner and spooky season will be here before we know it. If you aren't into horror, paranormal romances can provide a fun alternative for Halloween reading.

Melody Bittersweet is a medium from a long line of ghost mediums. She decides to set up her own agency and takes on a case, but there's unfinished business to contend with. To make matters worse, her fame-chasing ex is in town to solve the mystery first, and a handsome reporter keeps following her. The ghosts themselves are involved as well, and won't leave things alone.
This is the first book in a trilogy of Melody Bittersweet books. Her voice is fun and lively; growing up seeing ghosts like her mother and grandmother means that few things really bother her about the spiritual world. Her best friend Marina is a hoot, the brash and loving friend who brings a charm of her own. They're the main team for the Girls Ghostbusing Agency, though they take on Art, who is also charming in his own way. I immediately loved the trio, the way they interacted with each other, and how they saw the world around them.
The mystery involves the grand house in town that turns out to be haunted, and the house's owner wants the ghosts gone so he can sell it. We meet the trio of brothers who had been trapped there, one since his murder in the house in 1910, one due to regret and feeling driven away, and the murdered brother's twin. They can't be seen by anyone but Melody and her ex, who had dumped her and has since gone on to be a TV ghost hunter. Added to this mess is the local reporter who is sure that Melody and her family are all frauds and hates her ex for putting that fraudulent behavior on display. The problem for Melody isn't just that they keep interfering with her attempts to discover who the killer was, but that they're both attractive. She and her team talk with the ghosts and look around the house, and we eventually learn what happened.
This book is a fun start to the trilogy, and I look forward to what's in store for her and the rest of the team. Her family members are fun to read about, and I am also craving Nonna Malone's sweets after reading so much about them.

Leona Amber Sherwood is the responsible heir to her family. The only reckless thing she had ever done was marry in a midnight ceremony under a full moon to Erik Svensen, heir to her family’s enemies. She regrets it, and he won’t agree to a divorce unless they return an ancient spell book to his family’s secured facility. During their road trip, they're forced to work together as they encounter mythical creatures. He might not be as terrible as she had believed after all.
There's a rapid infodump of information on the families and Witchingdom in the early chapters, with glimpses into how the families operate. We also know why that particular book is valuable, and it sets up the enemies-to-lovers trope, fueling the eventual road trip, which is, of course, studded with only one bed trope events. The Sherwoods do what they must for their family members and society in general, while Erik's father thinks nothing of using his children to get what he wants and expects Erik to do the same. First his part, Erik has a plan for self-preservation and to save his siblings from their father, which is why he won't let Leona go. Mutual attraction helps his plan along.
The road trip is ridiculous in a fun way, and the snarky conversation between Erik and Leona is well done. Erik's father is a caricature of an evil, power-hungry man, setting him up as the better option because several selfish acts actually help his siblings or Leona. He isn't a knight in shining armor, just as Leona isn't actually a complete rule follower. The adventure to replace the book in the vault puts them through different scenarios where they must work together, and their overnight stops conveniently have them close to each other, letting them learn more about their true selves as well as giving opportunities for spicy scenes. It's a romance, so we ultimately get the happily ever after, even if it's not how they thought it would be.
My one issue is that Leona completely glosses over what is likely to be really complicated situations her sisters were involved in. I don't know if this book is part of a series or not. If it's not, it should be. Those stories are bound to be as over the top as this one is.

Rosemary Shaw's ability to see the dead had inspired most of her novels. Her most successful one is being turned into a movie, and there are plenty of ghosts in the manor house where it will be filmed. Ellis Finch is the leading man, looking to switch away from action movies. Even though Rosemary wants him off the project, he's determined to stay involved. In between writing deadlines, an adorable ghostly dog, and a pair of Regency-era women who are definitely nothing more than friends, Rosemary is at risk of telling Ellis her secret, or worse—falling for him.
This is the sequel to Best Hex Ever, but can be read as a standalone. Rosemary wrote a consumptive Victorian man as the main character in her Gothic horror novel, so of course, she doesn't think that an action hero can play the part. Ellis wants to change out of the genre now that he's 41, but his agent has blackmail material on him. While he can push to star in a Gothic horror movie, he has to fake date an up-and-coming starlet to please their mutual agent. Rosemary sees the ghost of his former dog following him, Regency era ghosts arguing, and is trying to write her next novel for her agent and editor. She is anxious about getting things right, and Ellis is as well. Both hide aspects of themselves from the rest of the world, but are comfortable around each other despite the rocky start.
I always love seeing how couples fit together and complement each other. The whiff of magic here in ghost sightings serves as a counterpoint to the main couple's romance and serves as foreshadowing as well. Hiding or suppressing aspects of your identity only makes you miserable and prevents you from finding happiness. We get the happily ever after once both are on the same page and feel it's worth the risk.

Kieran and his twin sister were freed from a curse, but otherwise, things don't go well for him. His boyfriend broke up with him, and he wrote a poem so terrible that it became a spell, making him invisible to the man. The Witches Council demands that he complete his magical training, so he says that his calling is to find a magical cure-all that can break any curse. He absolutely can't pull it off, so his sister Briar, her girlfriend Delilah, and a new crewmate, Sebastian, accompany him. If they survive the trip, it would allow him to determine what kind of person he wants to be.
This is the sequel to Practical Rules for Cursed Witches, where Delilah worked to break the curse on her family, ultimately breaking the curse on the Pelumbra family as well. It's referred to a lot in this one, so it definitely helps to have read that book first. I think you'd still understand this book without too much difficulty, without reading that one. But it's such a good book, go find it and read it if you haven't!
Kieran never trained with magic, and he's not physically impressive, either. He keeps comparing himself to his twin sister Briar, feeling wanting. Ash had drifted away and wouldn't let him even discuss taking a break in their relationship. Kieran poured his emotions into a poem, which became a spell that rendered him invisible to Ash. I love the idea of writing as magic, and that develops over time. They're on a quest to collect pieces of a shattered wand that would control a potential panacea, racing to get them ahead of an unscrupulous man wanting to sell it for profit. Sebastian used to work for him, but was impressed by Kieran saving his life at risk to his own. Of course, the two are attracted to each other, have secrets, and complement each other. This is a romance, after all, and Kieran literally must accept that he's worthy of love and holding magic, and that his early trauma doesn't define who he is and what kind of future he can have.
I enjoyed this story and really enjoyed seeing different towns and places within the world. The magic is fun and reflects each character's personality. If there are more stories in this world, I will run to read them!

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
