We have featured quite a few Halloween reads this month, but there are plenty of great books that aren't Halloween-themed to enjoy. I have a couple of romantic comedies for your reading pleasure today. If you are ready for Christmas or While You Were Sleeping is your favorite movie, then you don't want to miss these books.

| October 2025; Indie; ebook (105 pages) holiday romantic comedy |
Nora Blackburn is suspicious of everything and tired of ceaseless Christmas cheer. It's exhausting, and this is the first year she'll spend Christmas alone. She doesn't have to care about Christmas because her neighbor across the hall, Everett Sun, has plenty of holiday spirit. A new snow sculpture in a Toronto park at first seems to be an AI-generated photo, but Nora soon realizes it's real. She meets Everett in the park, and they go to investigate other sculptures. As strange things happen, Nora begins to question her growing feelings for Everett.
This is a romantic novella, with the grumpy Nora and sunshiney Everett getting paired off. Nora assumes everyone is out to scam and cheat others, and Everett is hiding his ability to create and manipulate snow, which he uses to create these intricate sculptures. They're neighbors and know a little about each other before they go visiting the sculptures together. There's an instant connection, and it's fun to see it develop while we know more about them and the sculptures than Nora does. Of course, the secrecy doesn't last long, but the reveal forces them to discuss their feelings, the truth, and magic. This is a cute story, with a hint of holiday magic for everyone involved.

Alice Rue Evades The Truth by Emily Zipps

| October 2025; Dial Press; 978-0593733035 audio, ebook, print (336 pages); Romantic Comedy |
Alice Rue had a crush on Nolan Altman for a long time, but never said anything. She saves his life, and EMTs tell his family that she's his girlfriend. While she wants to set the record straight, he's in a coma, and his family is comforted to have her with them. They're nice, supportive, and friendly, making it harder for her to tell the truth. It's even worse when she has growing chemistry with his sister, Van.
Remember the movie While You Were Sleeping? The concept here is a similar one. We open with Alice performing CPR on the guy she had a crush on, who had only passed by and said hello a few times when he worked late, because she's the frumpy night shift receptionist. When the EMT informs his family that she saved his life and is his girlfriend, his family gloms onto it hard and doesn't really let her explain. They want it to be true that he's no longer an awful guy and is ready to settle down with someone nice. Alice gets along with them, and they fill the family-shaped holes in her life.
Alice is sweet, and we see the story from her POV, so we understand why it's so hard to explain the misunderstanding. She cares about the Altman family, and the more she learns about them, the less she wants to hurt them or lose them. Of course, she gets closer to Van and falls in love with her, and there's the tension of Nolan being in a coma, then waking up to complicate matters. The truth eventually is revealed, and the happily ever after is a fun way to close out the story.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
