I was at an author event for Kristin Harmel the day that her new book was published. She referred to it as her love letter to Paris. She lived there for several months in her 20s, and many of the places mentioned in the new novel are places she spent time at when she lived there. I have been to Paris, and the book really brought back some wonderful memories and made me wish that I could pack my suitcase and spend more time in that beautiful city.
A Change in Genre
Kristin normally writes historical fiction that I always enjoy, and I wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy a contemporary fiction book from her. Was I ever wrong! This book was a wonderful book about love and loss and friendship and families and finding love even in the darkness.
It featured nine Americans in Paris and 7 intertwined love stories. Yes, that’s a lot of characters to follow, but they are all so unique with such different stories that it wasn’t difficult. Plus, the author intertwined their stories so well that it made the book fun to read.
The Love Stories
I’m not going to tell you about all 7 love stories in this review but will tell you a bit about two of the main love stories.
Julia and her 23-year-old daughter have come to Paris for a week. Julia had lived in Paris for several months when she was younger and wanted to share her love of the city with her daughter. But their story is bittersweet – Julia has cancer and only has a few months to live. Mother and daughter are trying to make memories as they face Julia’s death. Piper meets a waiter at a popular restaurant and finds that it’s easier to share her despair with a stranger as she struggles to think about life without her mother. Is it possible that he may become more than a friend? Julia also meets a man who is very interested in her, but she knows that she has to tell him the truth about her future.
There is also a storyline about a former rock star who is looking for a comeback and a WWII vet who finds out that the person in the resistance who saved him years before and that he fell in love with was still alive but had dementia. He had to take a chance to see her again and hope against all odds that she would remember their love from the war.
These intertwining stories—plus several others—unfold over a few breathtaking spring days, as an unforgettable group of Americans in Paris must find their way to their own versions of happily ever after in the City of Light.
