Weekly Short: Sex, Life, & Hannah Vol. 3

I thought this was going to be my pool book for the summer. There's a couple of criteria for being a pool book. One, it is absolutely necessary that it can get wet. Signed books and hardbacks are not allowed in the pool because accidents happen (particularly since I nap in the pool most of the time). Two, it's got to be light (story-wise, but size of book could be important, too).

Sex, Life & Hannah volume 3 The Summer Season by Dorota Skrzypek fit the bill perfectly. I always enjoy checking in with Hannah. Life isn't a storybook for Hannah. It's messy; it's real. Though, I'm starting to hope that Jack can get through to her. Her decision making skills leave a lot to be desired.

I read the first two volume in this series pretty close together. But it's been  a while since I read them (read my reviews of volume 1 and volume 2), and I was a bit confused by the timeline. Once I got past trying to figure out where this fit with the other two and just enjoyed the story for itself I got pretty engrossed. So engrossed in fact that when I got done in the pool I didn't stop reading it. Like the other two, I read this book in a day.

Now, it looks like I have to wait until next year for another installment of Sex, Life, & Hannah.

Writer Wednesday with Dorota Skrzypek

From Concept to Creation with Sex, Life, & Hannah

Sex, Life, & Hannah started out as a manuscript I wrote in 2004. I’ve been a journal writer my entire life; wrote in my first diary at age six, so there is a lot of content that has stacked up over the years. Well, back in 2004 I decided to do something with it.

But where to start? A memoir didn’t feel right, and I’d never set out to write non-fiction, so instead I tried to think of a pivotal moment in my life that could be the beginning of a fun fictional tale… I decided it was the day my boyfriend of many years, who I thought I was going to marry, broke up with me. On New Year’s Eve. It was a turbulent relationship to say the least, so the break-up was not unexpected, but everything that happened after it was.

Even though I didn’t want to write a memoir, the first draft of the manuscript read very personal. I literally took almost all the words right out of my journal entries and made them into chapters. We write best what we know, but I still wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it all.

I eventually got an editor, tore the manuscript apart with her (yes, there were pages all over the floor when we were done), and settled on a nine-chapter novella. In 2007 Sex, Life, & Hannah was born.

I get a lot of people asking me about the process of going from concept to creation. How do you organize all those ideas in your head? Or even know where to begin?

Three books into the Sex, Life, & Hannah series, and about to start work on the fourth (and last) I can honestly say the most beneficial tool for me is the one-page outline. With chapter numbers on one side and characters at the top I think of two to three main story points for each chapter. Knowing, at least loosely, how I’m going to get from Point A to Point Z gives my brain the parameters it needs to start the writing process.

The outline is supposed to be a living document, and mostly a tool to get your creative juices flowing in an organized manner, so don’t beat yourself up for not knowing exactly how each chapter is going to turn out. I’m still stuck on the last chapter and how I’m going to finish this series.

Though I believe the ending is never as important as the journey.

Dorota Skrzypek was born in Poland, grew-up in Canada, and moved to Southern California in 1997. After many years of flying airplanes, designing airports, and exploring the world, she decided to focus on writing fiction. Sex, Life, & Hannah is Dorota's juicy woman-on-top book series chronicling the exploits of Hannah, a female professional trying desperately to make sense of the L.A. single life. Through broken hearts, broken dreams, and nearly-broken bed frames, Hannah grapples with the modern late-twenty-something's conundrum: Does the fairytale life exist, and is it worth having?

Sunday Shorts: Sex, Life, & Hannah Spring Season

Sex, Life & Hannah Vol 1 Spring Season by Dorota Skrzypek
ebook
Published December 2009 by The Adventured of Hannah
ISBN13: 9780976886976
Read July 2012
Goodreads, Amazon

The Spring Season picks up just where the Winter Season ended (see my review). I always thought it was kind of bad that I had to see my ex every Sunday at church, but I think being involved in a car accident where you rear-ended The Ex would be even worse. You get an idea just how much of a loser The Ex is with the opening scenes.

I was curious to check in again with Hannah. She seemed to have something good going with Mr. Smythe, but I wasn't sure if she keep it together. Hannah does seem to have matured a bit, but that doesn't mean things go well or that she doesn't make poor decisions. One thing is for sure, when you are with Hannah life is an adventure.

Life the Winter Season, the Spring Season is a quick read. You feel like you are catching up with an old college friend, one who has some wild adventures and tales to tell. While not a cheap read (the ebook is $9.99 at Amazon), it is a quick fun read for the weekend, You could probably read both Winter and Spring in a weekend. Summer Season was just released and it's sitting in my TBR pile.

I wasn't real sure about reading this novella when I accepted because of sex being in the title. Anyone who has read my blog for a length of time knows how I feel about sex in books. While sex is the topic of conversation most the time for the characters, it is rarely seen (characters talk about their sex life, but you only occasionally get a glimpse into the bedroom.)

Whenever I'm offered a pdf to review, I always open it first on my computer to make sure the file works. I'm so glad that I did. The layout of the book is what really caught my eye. From the cover you can see that it is mocked up like a magazine. The magazine concept continues throughout the novella as you can see in this screen shot.

While I loved the concept, there were a few instances of it interfering with my reading on my Nook. But it definitely earned brownie points for creativity.

Sex, Life, & Hannah is a cute chick lit novella. It felt a little like Bridget Jones's Diary (I've only watched the movie, not read the book). Actually it read more like  a movie in my head than a book. I kept thinking it was like the "confessional" scenes in He's Just Not That Into You. Sex, Life & Hannah was formatted like that. You would get action scenes interspersed with Hannah's internal monologue about her life (or maybe it should be vice versa).

If you are into chick lit, then definitely check out Sex, Life, and Hannah. It is a serial novella and the second volume is also available.
