5 Audiobooks for Summer Road Trips

by Donna Huber

Are you hitting the road this summer? I won't be taking my annual trip to the Smoky Mountains this summer, but I do have a series of day trips planned for that week. So I will need some good reads to listen to and I thought it would be fun to listen to books featuring a road trip or journey of some sort. Here's a list of audiobooks that I have listened to or am considering for my own trip.

The Hired Man by Sandra Dallas ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

1937. It’s been seven years since the dust storms started in Colorado. Folks can barely remember a time when the clouds were filled with rain instead of dirt, and when the fields were green instead of brown. High school student Martha Helen Kessler and her family are luckier than most; they still eke out a living from the land. Even so, evidence of the Dust Bowl’s grim impact on families, especially on the women who bear the brunt of their husbands’ frustration and their children’s hunger, is everywhere.

2 Character Driven Historical Fiction Novels You Don't Want to Miss

by Donna Huber

I love historical fiction. It is fun and all learning about a different time period, but I love it when it focuses on the people. I recently finished two great books with terrific characters. I'm not usually a fan of westerns, but I LOVED the first book. If you are a Wizard of Oz fan, then you will definitely want to pick up the second book.

Reading a Second Book by Favorite Authors

by Donna Huber

After reading a phenomenal novel by an author the expectations for the next novel by that author is set pretty high. I recently read three books by authors who I've only read one book before - a book I loved. Did the second book live up to my expections?

Little Souls by Sandra Dallas ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

"Little souls?
It means the poor, the homeless, the common people nobody ever notices.  In truth, it applies to all of us.  We're all lost little souls" (p 36)

Two Excellent Novels Highlight Women in the Progressive Era

by Donna Huber

The early twentieth century in the United States was a period of great change both in terms of technology/industry as well as social issues. The period of the 1890s up through WWI has been coined the Progressive Era with prohibition, segregation, women's suffrage, urbanization, and immigration all being hot topics of the time. Against the backdrop of these issues at home, a war began to rage in Europe that the U.S. would eventually be drawn into. I recently read two excellent novels that highlight these social issues through strong and determined female characters.
