Road Trip by Mary Kay Andrews ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

With tensions simmering, two sisters hit the road and find themselves on twisty lanes, in colorful villages, at local pubs, and with handsome men whose gift of the gab is surpassed only by their charm. Can Maeve and Therese find the real painting, remove a family curse, solve a cold case, and actually survive without killing each other?

Meeting the Author!

by Susan Roberts

I love to go to author events.  It’s great to get to know some of my favorite authors and to find out the ‘inside story’ about their books. Luckily, I live in an area with lots of indie bookstores within 50 miles, and all of them do events with authors both local and nationwide.  I was kind of nervous the first time I went to an author event by myself and was afraid that I would just sit quietly by myself.  What I soon found out is that when you put a bunch of book-loving women in the same room, they immediately bond over books and are soon treating each other like friends.  I’ve attended two fantastic events this month with two of my favorite authors and thought I’d tell you about them.   Question – Do you like to meet new authors and old favorites?  Do you go to author events?

5 Audiobooks for Summer Road Trips

by Donna Huber

Are you hitting the road this summer? I won't be taking my annual trip to the Smoky Mountains this summer, but I do have a series of day trips planned for that week. So I will need some good reads to listen to and I thought it would be fun to listen to books featuring a road trip or journey of some sort. Here's a list of audiobooks that I have listened to or am considering for my own trip.

Looking Ahead to Beach Reading Season

by Donna Huber

As the calendar shifts from April to May, we shift to "beach reads". Beach reads, while often considered romance or women's fiction, can really encompass any genre as they are meant to be engrossing reads that you enjoy while relaxing. And I do have a mystery on the list. Here are a few that I have on my radar for May and June, in case you are packing for an upcoming vacation and want to plan your reading material.

Get Ready for Summer 2026 Beach Read Season

by Susan Roberts

It’s officially spring now, and even though the weather is very warm in some places, there is also snow falling in some of the Northern States.  It’s gotten warm in my part of North Carolina, which makes me start thinking about trips to the beach and, of course, beach reads to enjoy while I’m there. Here are a few of the beach reads that I’m looking forward to this year.

Mary Kay Andrews is a well-known Southern author who writes fantastic books about life in the South.  I wasn't really aware of all of the Christmas books that she's written until I read her current newsletter that started out with the comment above.  So I ordered her new Christmas short story and started looking through her backlog of books for Christmas books.

Take a Long Break from the Summer Heat with Mary Kay Andrews's Beach Read

by Donna Huber

Everyone refers to the St. Cecelia as “the Saint.” If you grew up coming here, you were “a Saint.” If you came from the wrong side of the river, you were “an Ain’t.” Traci Eddings was one of those outsiders whose family wasn’t rich enough or connected enough to vacation here. But she could work here. One fateful summer she did, and married the boss’s son. Now, she’s the widowed owner of the hotel, determined to see it return to its glory days, even as staff shortages and financial troubles threaten to ruin it. Plus, her greedy and unscrupulous brother-in-law wants to make sure she fails. Enlisting a motley crew of recently hired summer help—including the daughter of her estranged best friend—Traci has one summer season to turn it around. But new information about a long-ago drowning at the hotel threatens to come to light, and the tragic death of one of their own brings Traci to the brink of despair.

Bright Lights, Big Christmas by Mary Kay Andrews ~ A Review

by Susan Roberts

You can always depend on Mary Kay Andrews to give her readers a story with interesting characters and a good plot that leaves them with a smile at the end.  I don't read many Christmas books - especially not in 100-degree July - but I couldn't pass up the chance to read this new book.  I loved it!

Bright Lights, Big Christmas by Mary Kay Andrews ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

Kerry is at loose ends after being made redundant after the ad agency she worked for merged with another larger company. Back home in North Carolina, she hasn't figured out what to do next but she knows staying in the small town is not what she wants. When her father has a heart attack and can't make the annual trip to New York City to sell the family's Christmas trees. Her brother can't do the trip on his own so Kerry is roped into. While she can't imagine a worse time than spending a month with a taciturn brother she barely knows in an old "spam can" camper that doesn't have a working toilet or stove, perhaps NYC at Christmas will work its magic on her.

5 Summer Books To Read During the Dog Days of Summer

by Donna Huber

Schools in my area are already back in session - some have already finished their first week of classes! Summer went so quickly and I know I didn't read all the summer books I had hoped to get to. What about you? Perhaps you were busy entertaining kids during vacations that you didn't get to pick up one of this summer's blockbuster novels. Now they are back in school and you have the time (or at least can catch a few minutes of reading while waiting in the car pick-up line). Or maybe you are enjoying the last weeks of summer with a trip to the beach or lake. Here are 5 of the best summer books that you want to read during the dog days of summer.

Start Summer with Mary Kay Andrews's Newest Book: THE HOMEWRECKERS

by Susan Roberts

A new book by Mary Kay Andrews means that summer is just around the corner.  She is one of the few authors that I pre-order her new books without knowing anything about them and she's never let me down.  Her books are always a reflection of people and places in the South along with a bit of mystery and a bit of romance, tears, and laughter, and a plot that keeps me reading while I ignore the world around me.

Summer Reading, Movies, and Recipes

by Alison DeLuca

Whew, it's hot. Weather like this makes me want to run a 5K and read Anna Karenina, NOT.  Instead, I need fun, frothy novels for the beach or poolside as we face another humid thunderstorm.
