Merry Spooky Love by Josie Silver ~ a Review

by MK French

Melody Bittersweet tends to have haunted holidays, and this one is no different.  When Lucy Libertine, namesake of the charming old-school department store Libertines, unexpectedly dies, the store goes to her deceased sister's three children: businessmen twins Francis and Tom, and their younger sister Fleur. The twins plan to sell, so Lucy begins haunting them. They call in Melody's ghost-hunting ex to defend them, so Lucy goes to Melody to represent Fleur and the deceased Libertine family. Melody is all too happy to take another job, save a beloved local store, and maybe knock her ex down a paranormal peg or two. Paperwork states that the store cannot be sold within three months of the death of a board member—and Lucy has already been dead for one. With tensions riding high and her relationship with Fletcher caught in the crosshairs, Melody and her crew only have two months left to save the store.

Merry Spooky Love is the second Melody Bittersweet novel, following Crazy Spooky Love. The Bittersweet family can see ghosts; her ex Leo Dark can, and her current possible boyfriend Fletcher doesn't believe in it. Melody is drawn to save the Libertine department store and is doing what she can to help. Seeing deceased members of the family and passing along messages to Fleur is as bittersweet as her name. They care for the family legacy even as the twins don't, so it's a race to find any way they can to stop the sale. At the same time, Fletcher's incredulity deepens, and Melody won't have a relationship with someone who can't accept her truth.

I really felt for Melody in this one. She loves Fletcher and tries to help him even when he pushes her away. The Libertine family is divided, and she has her own family conflict right before the Christmas holidays. On top of that was a potential loss that would have broken her, and it made for a painful back half of the book for her. We still get a happily ever after for Melody and the community. Artie is as adorable as ever, Marina is a force of nature, and Melody's family is hilarious. A great follow-up book in the series.
