The Hitwoman in a Pickle by @JB_Lynn_Author ~ A Review

by Donna Huber

I get a little giddy (and I might do a little wiggle dance) when I read that opening line because I know I'm in for a fun read. In case you haven't read the series, each book starts with "you just know it's going to be a bad day when..."

May 2018; ebook (151 pages); cozy mystery
I'm not sure if I've kept up with a series to book 18 since I read The Babysitter's Club in middle school (I've only read 15 books from the Jack Ryan Universe and I love that series). Usually, I grow bored as the story becomes a cookie cutter plot. Lynn does a great job of creating a fresh story that is highly enjoyable each time.

I'm sure it helps that there is a huge cast of characters when you count Maggie's menagerie of animals. In The Hitwoman in a Pickle, animals play a large role including some outside her merry band of four-legged critters. I love animals in stories when they are funny and the animals are hilarious in the Hitwoman series. (As an ironic side note, I felt a bit like Maggie when I sat down to read this book as my own pets kept needing something - if only my attention - so that I only read a sentence or two at a time).

While the last few books felt like they were starting to wrap up the series, from this one I felt like the series could go on forever. I'm not sure which outcome I want. I love the series and always excited to read the next one so I would love for it to keep going. At the same, though, I want a happily ever after for Maggie. She has really grown since the first book - Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman. I guess there could be a happy middle road - she gets her happily ever after but continues to solve crazy mysteries.

It's not all about the animals, we get glimpses of all her family but two. The mob boss and hitman mentor make appearances. Actually, I think Patrick is in this book a bit more than recent books. Oh, and Maggie goes on a date with Angel. Though it is cut short by her crazy family, it is as close a normal date that I can remember her having.

Oh, and the family crisis that prematurely ended the date? Here's a little snippet from the 56% mark...

"She was kidnapped!" Loretta gasped again.

Who was kidnapped? You'll have to read the book to find out. (If you are worried about picking it up mid-series, it can be read alone, but to really get everything out of it I recommend starting with book 1. They are quick reads - a day or two is probably all you need per book.)

    1. I really like the series having the same opening. It is kind of like when you here the theme song to a favorite movie or tv series. I get the same rush of excitement.

  2. I'm not familiar with this series but the opening is really a grabber. This week I have Murder, She Reported by Peg Cochran - a nice historical mystery. Happy reading!

    1. I really like her openings. They don't usually turn out to be what you think is going to happen.

  7. This sounds like such a fun read! It's hard to find a series that's still good when it reaches 18 books.
Hope you have a great weekend! :)

  8. A nice, personal review, Donna. It is obvious to see that this series is still holding its appeal for you, after all this time.

Whilst JB Lynn's writing style may be just a little too 'cozy' for my liking, I do like that she has found herself a differentiating trademark in those opening lines and the suite of cover art for the series, when viewed all together, is amazing and so vibrant.

No sgn of book #19 in progress yet, but I hope you don't have to wait too long!

Thanks for sharing and have a good weekend :)
